Painting FAQ with Talin!
1. Students are frequently asking Talin how to soften up their brushes, and or just how to clean them.
Talin Answers: The BEST way to soften up some stiff brushes (but not hardened! these are hopeless!) is to do the following:
a. fill a glass jar 1/4 of the way up with straight Dawn Dish Soap. Or more if you have a lot of brushes, just enough to cover the bristle part of the brushes.
b. Put in brushes, swish a little and “stamp” then on the bottom a bit.
c. Leave them in the Dawn overnight.
d. Next day, scrub on them while rinsing well until water runs clear.
e. Voila! They should be in GREAT shape! Happy Painting!
Talin’s Tip #2:
While painting in any medium, or sketching, exaggerate the darks! This means the dark areas, shadow areas, and the “indented” areas of the subject matter. Don’t delete these darks when you start to bring in your lighter tones. Don’t cover them up with blending, or muddying them by smoshing non-descript colour over them.
It may look funny up close, while you are painting….but take your painting to a distance! Stand Back! Take a look! and your painting will have SUCH depth!
Without the Dark, there can be NO LIGHT! I always say that it is like life and the human race. If there were NO BAD people, we wouldn’t look so good!
